Ok, this one has been annoying me.

On the start menu, you know how it gives you the option to lock your computer, or shut it off?

Well, Mine looks like this:

When I click the button, it makes my computer Hibernate, I don't want it to do that. I want it to power off fully, but how do I change the button without having to go off to the side and select ''Shut Down"? It's nothing major, I was just wondering if you could actually do it.

i dun have vista anymore
but its prolly somewhere in there by right-clickin on sumptin

or maybe control panel->power options

If you're not on a notebook/laptop, go to Start > Control Panel > Power Options and disable Hibernation. Sorry if this isn't entirely accurate, I was a beta tester for Vista and honestly have not used it much since.

Thanks Tarun, I found it. It was in the ''Advanced Power Options"

Just told the Start Menu button to be Power Off instead of Hibernate, cheers!

Lol, I have no idea. It made my computer BSOD when I first installed Vista because I didn't realize that it was in hibernate and I kept trying to push the reset button. That's the first BSOD I've had in 2 and a half years between XP and Vista too, pretty sad.

Glad it helped you out too Snog, figured there was other people around here who may find it useful as well.

thanks. It gave me my first BSOD too. I had it for like 5 days, and I wanted it to go in standby, so I press the button and I get the BSOD. Turns out I didn't have a particular driver installed. But still, I found the standby function that XP had more reliable.

My sentiments exactly. But then again, I'm beginning to wonder that about a few things I'm discovering about Vista.

Thanks Brianna for asking, and thanks Tarun for the answer. I've only used that 'power' button once... since it didn't work like it should. Now I'll be using it all the time.

I hate that button. You can't really tell what it does at a glance. It has a number of possible states represented by different graphics, but most users (99% of them probably...) have no idea what the pictures MEAN. :P

i've never had a problem with it? just the the arrow going > and you get more options there, then Shut Down. otherwise, you can customize anything in the start menu if you please.

Alright, this next thing is a bit more obvious. When I first got Vista, I noticed the ''Run'' command line was no where to be found until I searched for it, that was annoying too.. so If by any chance you don't know how to add that to the Start menu like Windows XP, this is how:

Open the start menu, and then right click and go to ''Properties'', and then go to ''Customize'' - Just checkmark the ''Run'' box, and then hit ''OK'' and then ''Apply'' on the other window, that should put it into your Start menu, and you can remove other elements you don't want in the exact same manner:

Maybe it will help some, but this bit is way more obvious.

You can run some of the switches from the games menu as well which I think is a rather nifty feature.

Actually, nice though a clean desktop is, I still prefer to have 2 GW icons on my desktop - one for play, 1 for -image.

The Games folder annoys me - not least because the icons in there are forever changing. It varys between 4 and 5 different icons for Guild Wars - odd.

I just add and remove the Image tag from the icon in my Object Dock when necessary: I don't use -Image enough to warrant having icons about for it.

Though Snog, my folder only has Eotn (Which counts for Proph+EoTN, they're both Proph apparently?) Factions, and Nightfall. I'd delete the extras if I was you heh.

Thanks in advance for the tips so far given/to be given in the future, this is like a nit-pick guide for Vista, lol.

Back to Brianna's original question. I followed the directions and told the computer to shut down instead of hibernate when I click on the 'power button' and... I woke up at 3 this morning to see the slowly flashing 'hibernating' light reflecting off the wall. So I opened up my power options again to double check and it shows 'shut down' as the power button option.

Is there a "No... really... I mean it... I really want you to shut down when I click on that button... really" option?

The power button lights up and so do the other two buttons. Also when I mouse over it says "Saves your session and puts your computer in a low-power state so that you can quickly resume working."

There's something else interesting going on that I'm a bit concerned about. My laptop (XP) disconnects from the modem when it sleeps or I turn it off. This desktop system (Vista) shows active on the modem even when it's shut down.

To clear the air. It goes into hibernation on default because of the OS specs.

Vista is an "instant on" OS. This enables them to meet that requirement.

So the fix hasn't worked. Maybe it's an administrator thing? When I mouseover it says "Shuts down Windows and powers off your PC" or something similar.

{edit} wait a second - look at Brianna's screenshot again:

Are you sure you changed the START MENU power button setting, rather than the POWER BUTTON action? The latter affects what happens when you press the power button on your PC's case. In this case it turns it into a software shutdown and power off button rather than the cut-the-power button of old.
